Horry-Georgetown Technical College Nursing & Health Sciences Institute is a state-of-the-art facility dedicated to health science education. Located at the Grand Strand Campus, the structure was originally a 1980s Air Force Base youth center. A new second floor was added above the original gymnasium, increasing the structure's size by over 7,000 square feet. A two-story glass enclosure near the entry allows natural light to permeate the public spaces and student study areas.
Designed to simulate the functionality and layout of a hospital, the first floor includes eight flexible high-fidelity simulation rooms for students to practice clinical techniques, enhance patient communication, and apply team-based problem solving. These spaces are supplemented with low-fidelity skills labs, a technology innovation lab, and an EMT/EMS lab. The second floor includes touchdown offices for faculty, student study areas, and classrooms.
The project is expected to receive two Green Globes.
The design is a collaboration between Quackenbush Architects + Planners and Perkins & Will.
